Aside from charring on the grill, drizzling in ketchup and stuffing in a bun, we also like to keep a packet on hand for simple weeknight suppers like this sausage, bean and kale one-pot.
We were pleased to discover this year's line-up included everything from spicy lamb merguez to hearty chorizo and indulgent cheese-infused creations, alongside the crowd-pleasing cumberlands. How we test sausages
Our panel of 10 testers tasted 18 sausages, from budget supermarkets to upmarket online butchers, to find which ones are worthy of gracing your barbecue this summer. They were searching for well-balanced flavours (we're talking simple sage and black pepper to fiery jalapeno), generous meat filling, crispy skin and that all-important juicy middle.

These chipolata swirls are packed with cracked black pepper, cheese, herbs and smoky bacon bits, before being finished with a "mouth-watering" BBQ sauce. Enjoy fresh off the BBQ in a soft, floury bun with ketchup or fiery mustard (or a bit of both!).

Tesco has chosen classic spices in this pork base (think sage, garlic and red pepper), allowing the jalapeno to take centre stage. The bright chilli heat builds gradually without overwhelming the palate, thanks to the addition of creamy red Leicester.

These "intensely gamey" lamb sausages pack a real punch. Our panel was won over by the well-integrated dried mint seasoning, subtle smokiness and mouth-watering BBQ char. The quality of the coarse, grass-fed lamb mince is second-to-none, making this our worthy winning lamb sausage for 2022.

BEST CHICKEN SAUSAGE
The Jolly Hog Summer Cluckers, 4pk
Score: 73/100
Deviate from the classic pork base with these lighter, herb-laced chicken sausages. Though the flavour is milder than most, the seasoning is spot on, with sage, onion and smoked salt at the fore. The accompanying apple BBQ sauce was a highlight for our testers, adding a subtle bitter sweetness to the meat.
This beautiful whirl of orange chorizo will make a striking centrepiece for your BBQ spread. The meat turns a gorgeous golden brown on the grill, allowing the pork to caramelise and develop a rich flavour with spicier notes of paprika and a sharp twang of Manchego. Well-balanced and perfectly seasoned, every bite was juicy and delicious.

BEST FOR GROWN-UPS
Farmison Lamb Merguez Sausages, 6pk
Score: 73/100
The merguez is a long, thin traditional hot and spiced lamb sausage originating from the Middle East and North Africa. Farmison makes them with meat from the lamb shoulder and neck for maximum flavour, before adding a blend of cumin, coriander, paprika and chilli. Bold aromatics are at play here so they are best suited to grown-up palates, but a big hit with our panel.

Swaledale Lamb Merguez Sausages, 6pk
Score: 73/100
Another mergeuz sausage, but this time combining lamb shoulder and breast with a "spot-on seasoning" blend of garlic, caraway, cinnamon and ground fennel. Though more subtle in flavour than the aroma suggests, these well-balanced, warming sausages would make an excellent addition to any BBQ spread or with shakshuka for a special Sunday brunch.

BEST BUDGET SAUSAGE
Aldi Specially Selected Pork Sausages, 6pk
Score: 72/100
These budget-friendly bangers certainly don't cut corners when it comes to flavour. They're packed with quality pork shoulder and, though they've kept the seasonings relatively simple (black pepper, nutmeg and oregano), our panel felt they offered lots of scope for experimenting beyond the BBQ – why not try in this slow cooker casserole?

Sainsbury's Taste The Difference New York Deli Inspired Hot Dogs, 4pk
Score: 72/100
There's no beating a classic hot dog, but Sainsbury's has gone one step further by infusing rich, flavoursome pork meat with a tangy hint of dill pickles – genius!
Our panel loved the combo of salty pork and sweet pickle, and reckon these would be perfect topped with a generous drizzle of American mustard and crispy fried onions.
